Seeney unphased by major mining delays

NEWS that a multi-billion-dollar coal mining project in western Queensland faces a 12-month delay has not phased Queensland Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney.

Mr Seeney has worked closely with the GVK Hancock Alpha project in his role as State Development Minister, but when asked about its apparent hurdles, his office said significant decisions still had to be made by the company itself.

"The GVK/Hancock Alpha Coal project was the most advanced proposal in the Galilee Basin and now has state and federal approval to proceed to development," a government spokesman said.

"The government has always acknowledged that proponents of new projects will make decisions on when and how they proceed based on their particular business and commercial circumstances.

"The Indian powerhouse's Alpha coal mine west of Rockhampton, its port expansion plans at Abbot Point near Bowen and the 500km rail line to connect the two are estimated to be worth $10 billion in total.
