Seniors' housing boost

ANOTHER huge seniors' living complex is on the cards for the Tweed.

Developer Ressen Pty Ltd has lodged plans with Tweed Shire Council for a $12.5 million, eight-storey complex with 74 units in Powell St, Tweed Heads, just 400 metres from the Tweed Centro shopping complex.

The plans were lodged on June 24, hard on the heels of another seniors living complex proposed by another company near the centre of Murwil- lumbah.

The latest plans appear to replace an earlier proposal put forward by Ressen in 2008 for a six-storey block of 27 units and approved by the council in February 2009. Ressen did not pursue that development despite the approval.

The company's town planners, Planit Consulting, have told the council the complex would accommodate “mainly active persons over the age of 55 years, including married couples”.

“It is anticipated that the dominant age bracket will be persons aged between 65-75 years,” the consultants said.

The development application added that the operator of the complex would “ensure that the residents will have available to them a range of on-site services such as meals, personal care, home nursing visits and assistance with housework”. Planit Consulting said the area was developing as a “health and aged-care hub” with much of the surrounding development “being aged care”.
