SES and coastguard volunteers will be in Terranora Creek this afternoon on a joint training exercise.

Kingscliff Coast Guard commander John Purnell said the exercise was to ensure the groups were ready to act in a flood emergency.

SES Richmond/Tweed area region controller Simon Gregg said the Tweed unit had a good working relationship with emergency services in the area.

"These joint exercises are not that common, but the Tweed unit is used to working with emergency services in the region," Mr Gregg said.

"We have about six boats in this exercise ferrying people from one side of Terranora Creek to the other."

Mr Gregg said about 25 SES volunteers would be involved in the exercise.
