SES get 48 calls for help during Mur’bah flash flooding

LAST week's flooding caused plenty of wet toes, after the SES received 48 requests for assistance around the region.

SES Richmond-Tweed region controller Kaylene Jones said five rescues took place in Murwillumbah, two of which involved animals.

Ms Jones said one rescue was medical-related; the other two were flood-related people rescues.

She said people driving into floodwaters were the key issue.

"People think they know the road," Ms Jones said.

"They think they know how deep the water is, but they don't know what's happening under the water.

"The bottom line is, it's never safe."

Over 300mm of rain fell on the Tweed between Thursday and Friday mornings, with rain continuing throughout much of Friday.

A council spokesman said eight roads were closed on Friday, with Wooyung Rd remaining closed into the weekend.

The deluge led some roads to experience minor landslides; it's advised to drive with extra caution on windy roads.
