Pair rescued from roof of home
TWO people were rescued late this morning off the roof of their Stotts Creek home by SES staff who managed to reach them from the Murwillumbah side of the affected flood area.
The pair were transported by SES vehicles to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital for a health check.
The rescue effort also involved police, Rural Fire Service and Voluntary Rescue staff.
In a happier evacuation process, residents from Fingal, Condong, Tumbulgum and Chinderah who had sought overnight shelter at the Kingscliff Evacuation Centre were permitted to return to their homes this morning.
Meanwhile, the clean-up in and around Murwillumbah proceeded at a hectic pace.
The Byangum Bridge which had stockpiled a huge variety of debris on the back of the flood waters which swept over it throughout most of yesterday has been reopened to vehicular traffic.
Workers laboured at a hectic pace throughout the morning, using both elbow grease and machine to clean away the debris which included varying sizes of branches and logs.
The flooding around the lowlands of Murwillumbah badly affected Stan Sercombe Oval, the home of the Murwillumbah Mustangs Rugby League Club.
A handful of club members and officials converged on the ground this morning to assess the situation and commence the clean-up.
Unfortunately for the club, two freezers and a refrigerator were damaged in the floodwaters and will need to be replaced, as will training gear such as tackling bags.
Mustangs president Nigel Lofts was one of the Mustangs mob working up a sweat in the humid conditions.
"In hindsight - which is always a wonderful thing - I suppose we could have come over here and raised the gear off the ground," he said.
"But how far would we have had to have raised it?
"And really, the water just came up so quickly following that sustained deluge in the morning and afternoon, making task impossible."
