Seven officers injured during rescue at burning building
THE dramatic rescue of two men from a burning building in Sydney's west left nine people in hospital on Tuesday.
Police officers braved heavy smoke and flames to reach the men, who were trapped under rubble following an explosion at an Afghan supermarket.
They had been patrolling a street at Wentworthville when they came across the disaster in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Voices could be heard crying out from the wreckage and neighbours told police two men were still missing.
Seven officers were injured during the rescue and were treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and burns.
The rescued men received burns and remained in a serious but stable condition on Tuesday night.
The cause of the fire was yet to be determined.
