Not-so silent night

SEVEN'S 4pm national newsreaders Mel Doyle and Matt White are trading their suits for Santa hats and sleigh bells this weekend.

The pair will co-host the Carols in the Domain, now in its 31st year, from Sydney's beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens.

This year marks Doyle's first year as Carols co-host, while White made his debut last year alongside Sunrise newsreader Natalie Barr.

"I'm super excited to host this beautiful night with my charming buddy Matt," Doyle said.

"Being a Sydney girl, Carols has always been a part of my Christmas celebrations and now I'm a mum my children love going so I've got some major cred with them by being a co-host this year."

White said he would have "gatecrashed" the Carols if he wasn't co-hosting again this year.

"If I wasn't asked back to host this Christmas I would have gatecrashed the party anyway," he said.

"It's such an unbelievable night.

"There is so much energy, passion and goodwill. It is unlike anything I have ever experienced in 20 years of presenting on TV."

The much-loved Christmas event will star Australian music icons Jimmy Barnes, and Tina Arena, fresh from her grand final appearance on Dancing With The Stars.

The Carols will also include performances from preschool favourites The Wiggles and X Factor alumni Samantha Jade and Johnny Ruffo.

This year's X Factor winner Dami Im and third place finalist Jai Waetford will also take to the stage.

It marks the end of a career-changing year for Im and Waetford, who recently finished touring the country with the 2013 X Factor Live Tour.

Musical theatre fans will also enjoy a special performance from the cast of Strictly Ballroom The Musical and Grease The Musical.

This year's event, sponsored by Woolworths, will raise funds for the Salvation Army's OASIS Youth Support Network.
