Coast's 'depraved sex monster' could be released today
A MAGISTRATE will today decide if a man he referred to as a "depraved sex monster" will be freed from jail or kept in custody.
Offences to which David James Tilbrook pleaded guilty yesterday included entering a women's public toilet at Kings Beach on April 29 to film a woman while she showered.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Shane Raison said Tilbrook had filmed up a woman's skirt at Kmart in Caloundra on October 30 last year and had invaded another woman's privacy with a camera in the car park of Stockland Shopping Centre 10 minutes later.
Maroochydore Magistrates Court also heard of two separate incidents on a train on November 24 last year when the 26-year-old had positioned himself near women and started masturbating.
Tilbrook was also charged with trespassing in a neighbour's yard in Caloundra West and filming a woman on March 25 this year.
Sgt Raison referenced specialist's reports from assessments done on Tilbrook in 2010 and 2012 during previous prison stints, detailing how he had been identified as a high risk of re-offending with sex crimes.
Magistrate John Hodgins said it seemed experts predicted Tilbrook's offending would get worse over time.
He said without any recent psychiatric reports providing evidence to the contrary, it appeared he was dealing with someone who was "basically a depraved sex monster".
Tilbrook's partner of the past two years and mother were in the public gallery to support him.
Defence lawyer Nathan Turner said his client's partner had informed him Tilbrook's urges only surfaced when he was drug affected.
"She is prepared to stand by him; whatever support he needs for however long he needs it," Mr Turner said.
He also detailed some events from his client's "terrible" childhood.
"He obviously has a problem. He accepts that."
Mr Turner urged Mr Hodgins to release Tilbrook under a supervised order, his client having spent the past 139 days in custody for the charges and others including burglary and possession of drug utensils.
"He is not a serious sex offender but he is a sex offender," Mr Turner said.
Mr Hodgins adjourned sentencing so he could consider the submissions.
He is due to pass sentence this afternoon.
