Shadow minister hopes talk not a delaying tactic
NSW Shadow Health Minister Walt Secord said the Tweed Hospital was under "enormous pressure” and hoped talk of a new site is not another tactic to further delay election funding promises.
"We note that Mr (Brad) Hazzard is new to the role but I hope this is not another cruel trick to divert medical staff and patients from the need for improvements at Tweed Hospital - and its original promise,” he said.
"Sadly the National Party is getting up to their old tricks and this could be a stalling tactic.”
Mr Secord met with doctors to discuss the hospital and the need for improvements earlier this year. He said he would give new NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard time to settle into his role but called for action soon.
The Tweed was the new minister's first hospital stop since being handed the portfolio last week.
He said the fact he visited the region first showed how high on his priorities it was but refused to commit to directing previously promised funds to redeveloping it or to build on a new site until he'd had a chance to understand the situation.
"I think the issue for me first as minister is to make sure the planning is appropriate for what the Tweed needs,” he said.
"But then, yes, full steam ahead in terms of whatever money needs to be expended.”
The minister talked to staff and inspected Tweed Hospital facilities and acknowledged they needed work.
"My feeling after discussions today and having had a look around is we'll probably have to spend quite a bit of taxpayer money here even if we are to move to a greenfield site,” he said.
