Sharks face Capalaba challenge
AFTER two wins and sitting on top of the ladder, the Sharks tackle the very strong Capalaba team this evening at South Tweed Sports Club.
Whilst Capalaba are yet to win a game they have played last year's premiers, Helensvale, and only lost one rink to lose by 10 shots and then played the much-improved Springwood last Saturday to lose again by 10 shots.
The Comets will be keen to get a win under their belt, so the Sharks will need to play at their very best to win.
The Sharks will see the return of star recruit and Australian player Sean Baker to the side to further strengthen the team.
His rink had a great eight shot victory last week in his absence.
Baker's lead, Peter Richards, is in brilliant form whilst second, Max Jaffray and last week's skip and now third, Wayne Wilson, are both in fine touch - this rink will be hard to beat.
Kelvin Kerkow got across the line last week on the last end in what he described a scratchy performance, but his rink is laden with talent.
His lead, Sally Hickman, is a former State bowler, and his second recruit Dean McWhinney. represents Queensland in the under 25 group whilst third, Geoff Hawken has won almost every major tournament in Queensland and is a current member of the over 60 State team.
This rink will also be tough to beat.
The Sharks final rink, comprising the "golden oldies" skipped by Neville Jenkins, has yet to win a game this year and they are eager and determined to change this short losing streak.
They have in their team two current Queensland over 60 representatives in Jenkins and yours truly Smith, whilst second, Hec Beswick, has played for both Tasmania and Queensland in his long outstanding bowls career.
This rink is keen to get a win on the board.
However Capalaba are also laden with many good players and none better than the recently selected Queensland representative, Brendan Eagan, who is in great touch at present, winning both his games against quality opposition in Australian star Brett Wilkie and Springwoods star skip, Jason Constable.
He is joined Jamie Anderson who won most of his games last season.
Capalaba have great depth and have quality leads which will put them in good stead against the Sharks.
Capalaba will feel confident given they defeated the Sharks last season, so the Sharks will need to be at their best to win at home, but with the return of Sean Baker, the home team should just prevail in a close game.
In reserves the Sharks appear too strong with undefeated skipper Lindsay Ponting in great form and ably supported with quality skips Ray Hickman, Charlie Neave and John O'Conner.
Capalaba have yet to win a game, so they will be eager to perform.
