Police force new mega-servo to have ‘pay first’ pumps

THE construction of a major service centre on the Tweed Valley Way at Chinderah is set to begin late this year, after approval from the Tweed Shire Council.

The Shell highway service centre will be on a 3.9 hectare block of a former sugar cane farm, next to Melaleuca Station, and will service northbound traffic on the Pacific Highway.

It will have four food outlets, including McDonald's, an outdoor dining area and playground, truckers lounge, public amenities and parking spaces for 100 cars, 25 trucks and five buses or caravans.

The council imposed more than 140 conditions on the service centre, including a requirement that motorists "pay before you pump", following an objection to the DA by the Tweed Byron Local Area Command Police.

The police were not formally referred a copy of the application, however discussions were held with officers during the assessment process.

Police requested the station had to cut down on fail-to-pay offences, which account for more than 50% of frauds reported in the command.

Police said 75% of all fail-to-pay offences are at the Chinderah BP, directly opposite the proposed Shell site.

Meanwhile, to rectify fuel theft at BP Chinderah, changing the fuel pumps to have a requirement to pay for fuel before it is pumped, would cost millions of dollars.
