Showing they care for Fingal
DOZENS of people have proved that support is strong for Tweed beaches when they turned out to help restore dunes at Fingal Beach yesterday.
Most notable were members of the Fingal Van Owners Association, who recently joined Coastcare to show their dedication to the area, and in an act of defiance to the Tweed Shire Council whose proposed development would see long-term casuals
evicted.
Fingal Van Owners member Steve Holland said helping the Coastcare group with its activities was one small way they could contribute to the local community.
“We spend so much time down here we thought it would be a good idea to join Coastcare – after all Fingal is our home away from home,” Mr Holland said.
The gathering planted about 120 different plants including pandanus trees, tuckeroo, sophora and beach birdseye.
Coastcare president Kay Bolton said Coastcare welcomed the new members.
“We are really pleased to have them. They already have been, and will continue to, look after the area, keep it free of rubbish and look after the plants,” she said.
The planting attracted a range of ages from children to a 90-year-old and followed on from a weeding session on Saturday that removed bitou and other noxious plants.
