Simpson loses LNP leadership race

FIONA Simpson has failed in her bid for the Liberal National Party (LNP) leadership.

The top spot went to the MP for Surfers Paradise, John-Paul Langbroek, who was declared the new leader in a party room meeting at 1.00 pm today.

Mr Langbroek was former shadow minister for education and skills as well as shadow arts minister.

Former leader Lawrence Springborg has been elected deputy.

Both Ms Simpson, the MP for Maroochydore, and Clayfield MP, Tim Nicholls, had also made a bid for the position.

In a media statement the Ms Simpson congratulated Mr Langbroek.

"Choosing a leader to guide the team and uphold the LNP's vision is a challenging task and I fully commend our party members for carrying out this democratic process with respect and always with the best possible outcome for Queenslanders in mind," she said.

"I am confident John-Paul will work hard to successfully harness the momentum already achieved by our former leader, Lawrence Springborg."

Talking after the meeting, Ms Simpson told the Daily that with the leadership debate over she plans to concentrate on working hard for her electorate and the LNP team.

"I put my hand up for the leadership position because I felt I had what it takes to take the fight to the government," she said.

"I have to respect the party's decision and I will support the leader they have chosen."

She said she has a good working relationship with Mr Langbroek and is confident of being appointed a cabinet position when he announces his team.
