Pete Murray's rock & roll cafe at Byron Bay

SINGER Pete Murray is opening his own restaurant and bar in Byron Bay and he'll be entertaining patrons with the occasional performance.

"I've always wanted my own bar - a nice, quiet bar where I can keep the bar stools warm," he joked yesterday amid renovations at Byron Bay.

"I'll perform here occasionally - but mostly it will be a place where we can showcase local talent," he said.

The restaurant/bar - to be named Frankie Brown Cafe, after Murray's pet kelpie - opens next Tuesday, August 6, at 32 Lawson Street, previously the Aztec Mexican Restaurant.

Murray has partnered with friends Sally and Brad Cook who have moved from the Sunshine Coast to establish the new venture.

"Pete and I used to work together 20 years ago at a Brisbane gym, before he'd become a musician," chef Sally Cook said.

"When I told a mutual friend I wanted to open a restaurant in Byron Bay she put me back in touch with Pete because he'd always wanted to open a bar," she said.

Murray said he wanted the bar to have a "cool, retro, New York-style feel with original music."

"We've got this long bar where people can sit and have a drink and share a meal," he said.

The Lawson Street restaurant is being completely overhauled in time for its opening night and will feature a new roof, bar and furniture.

The cafe will have a range of French/Italian inspired food with the emphasis on shared-plates, Ms Cook said.

Menu samples include scallops with avocado and tomato salsa, capsicum jam and pancetta crisps.

"Seafood has been my speciality, but we'll have something for everyone's tastes," she said.

"The focus will be on quality, fresh ingredients."

Frankie Brown Cafe will be open Tuesday-Sunday for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
