Single, older women most at risk of homelessness

OLDER single woman were the highest risk group for homelessness last year, a new report has found.

The Anglicare report showed older single women were more vulnerable to poverty and homelessness than any other major demographic.

It found the key risk factors for older women were lower workforce participation, lower income and savings, a lack of affordable housing and lifelong caring responsibilities.

"Anecdotally, we know that the instances of older women experiencing unstable housing are on the rise," the report reads.

Some of those at risk of homelessness were women who left abusive relationships after their children left home.

The report found women of retirement age had 57% less put away in superannuation than men the same age, partly due to taking time off work to care for family.
