Sizzles to raise homeless issue

NEARLY 50% of the estimated 105,000 people who sleep on the streets around Australia on any given night are under 25 years of age.

Today has been proclaimed Youth Homelessness Matters Day and this year's theme is Hide ‘n' Seek, an initiative to provoke community awareness of the numbers of young people whose homes are on park benches, under bridges or in dark alleys.

Three venues on the Tweed will be home to public displays from 11am-3pm, where those attending can snack on a sausage sandwich and, most importantly, gain information on this disturbing issue.

The venues are: Centrelink Office, Blundell Blvd, Tweed Heads South; Cabarita Youth Service at 45 Tweed Coast Rd, Bogangar; and Nortec Youth Service, 1/5 Queen St, Murwillumbah.

Tweed Shire Council youth development officer Sylvia Roylance said many in our community are totally unaware of the problems of youth homelessness.

“Homelessness is certainly not just the domain of older people,” Sylvia said.
