Skaters very keen to grind their decks at new skatepark

YOU know you have created something special when people break in to use it before construction is complete,

Such is the case with the new Coolangatta Skate Park, which opened its metaphorical doors at Lanham Street, Coolangatta, to local skateboarders and BMX riders on Friday.

Keen locals were entering in droves before the park was officially finished, causing quite a stir with Coolangatta Police, who have the park on constant CCTV watch.

Coolangatta Police Sergeant Steve Quinn said police regularly patrolled the area as per a Gold Coast City Council request.

"Construction wasn't complete and they were concerned people using it would cause damage," he said.

Sgt Quinn also confirmed that CCTV cameras were installed in the area and they would continue to be monitored.

On website skateboard.com.au last week a Gold Coast City Council spokesman responded to skaters who were sharing information about the unfinished park.

"Glad you like the park, it has been a labour of love on a extremely tight budget," he said.

"Park designed by Premium and constructed by Convic."

The spokesman warned skaters that police would be on the look out for people entering the site early, but understood the skater's impatience to try out the new facilities."

Just trying to get the turf down now, if you could keep out for the next two days (dependant on the weather) and it'll be ready to skate," he said.

"Also just wanted to let you know that your movements inside the fence are being monitored by CCTV with a direct live link to the police station 300 metres away.

"They have cleared out at least 20 people from the site so far."

Some areas of the park were still waiting turfing today, but council had allowed skaters entry regardless.
