Sky shines spotlight on Richmond electorate

RICHMOND has emerged as one of the key battlegrounds in the lead-up to next month's Federal Election with the race for the seat continuing to attract national attention.

Incumbent Labor member Justine Elliott is locked in a tight contest with Nationals candidate Matthew Fraser and the Greens' Dawn Walker rated genuine contenders ahead of the July 2 poll.

A recent boundary redistribution delivered Ballina to the electorate, prompting speculation that Richmond had become a key focus for the Greens outside of metropolitan areas.

The Coalition is also confident of a strong showing in the region with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visiting the neighbouring seat of Page last week.

The race for Richmond is now set to attract more attention with Sky News to broadcast its news and current affairs program Paul Murray Live from Twin Towns on Thursday night.

The broadcast is part of a Sky News initiative designed to shine the spotlight on issues affecting regional Australians in the lead-up to the election.

Among the guests already committed to join host Paul Murray are Nationals candidate Matthew Fraser and Senate candidates Senator David Leyonhjelm from the Liberal Democratic Party and Kirralie Smith from Australian Liberty Alliance.

The arrival of the Sky News program comes just weeks after Richmond was the subject of a bulletin that aired on ABC TV's current affairs news program the 7.30 Report.

The Sky News program will broadcast live from Twin Towns on Thursday, June 23 and will air from 9pm on Foxtel's Sky News.
