THE NSW police force has offered prayers and support to the family of slain Tamworth highway patrol officer and father of six, Senior Constable David Rixon.

Snr Cnst Rixon, 40, was shot while on duty this morning outside a unit block in Lorraine St, Coledale just before 8am.

"He is survived by his wife Fiona and six children.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Senior Constable Rixon's family and colleagues," Commissioner Scipione said.

The Police Association of NSW (PANSW) said police are shocked over the tragic death.

"Today is an extremely sad day for police across NSW, and for the entire community," PANSW President Scott Weber said.

"All police officers, along their friends and families, have been shaken and saddened by the incident this morning.
