Slipper keeps his job for now

JULIA Gillard has refused to push the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Peter Slipper, to stand aside while he is investigated over allegations he sexually harassed a male staffer and misused his travel entitlements.

The Prime Minister won't comment on the scandal engulfing the Liberal defector who helps shore up her minority government, but the government's leader in the House of Representatives, Anthony Albanese, said yesterday that Mr Slipper ''had done a very good job as speaker''. '

Ms Gillard cannot remove Mr Slipper as his role is appointed by the Parliament.
