Smoke alarm shuts Tugun Bypass tunnel overnight
BOTH directions of the Tugun Bypass were experiencing serious congestion on Thursday afternoon after a smoke alarm was triggered in the tunnel.
It's understood southbound traffic was diverted to the Gold Coast Hwy, as northbound lanes were being reopened.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said firefighters were called to the scene about 2pm.
The northbound lane of the tunnel was slowed to 40kmh about 7.30pm on Thursday, with road crew workers seen on the righthand lane.
It's currently unclear what triggered the alarm, but the spokeswoman said a fire has not been confirmed.
