Snapper not so dapper, but the pro must go on

SNAPPER Beach was looking rocky today, but Quiksilver Pro organisers say the show must go on.

A horde of professional surfers and onlookers have begun to converge on the world renown beach before the event kicks into gear on March 2.

But a lack of sand as a result of recent weather conditions has left the beach looking bare and has reduced crowd viewing space.

Quiksilver Pro media director Steve Robertson was optimistic about the state of Snapper Beach.

"I don't think it's going to be a problem," he said.

"It sounds like the sand is moving around and it will sort itself out."

Mr Robertson said that the weather for the next couple of days was expected to help the process along.

"The forecast is looking surprisingly good and looks like we'll have some great weather," he said.

"We're confident the event will go ahead as planned."

Locals Bruce and Jo Carothers were enjoying the scenery at Snapper Beach yesterday afternoon and Mrs Carothers said the beach was going through a natural cycle.

"We've been coming here for years and it's happened over and over since we've been coming.

"The sand always ends up coming back," she said.

"Last time we came here there was a lot more space for the spectators.

"But it's still not as bad as the rest of the coast."
