Snappy birthday celebration
CURRUMBIN'S Surf World hosted four leading Australian photographers as part of the museum's first anniversary celebrations.
Event organiser Peter ‘Joli' Wilson said more than 60 visitors attended the informal gathering last Friday, which included photographers Tony ‘Harro' Harrington, Marty Tullemans and Ben Ey.
“The night gave an insight to a lot of people about the dramas and traumas that can come with surf photography and how easy or hard it was to take the shot,” Mr Wilson said. It gave faces to the people who take the photos and there were lots of questions from the audience.
“Tony discussed the way people go about their work - like he watches storms brewing around the world on websites and then follows those red dots with a few surfers.
“It's much easier to chase a swell with today's technology.”
Mr Wilson said four different types of photographers were showcased on the night in the one room.
“We had our favourite photos there on the night to discuss the stories behind them,” he said.
An exhibition following the night will be at the surf museum for six weeks. Mr Wilson said he hoped similar photographer nights would become a regular feature.
