Sneak peek at Games cycle course

CYCLISTS taking part in this year's Queensland Elite Time Trial Championships will get an early look at the course proposed for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The Tour de Valley, including the 2012 Queensland Elite, Under 19 and Masters Individual Time Trial Championships, is on September 8 in Currumbin Valley.

The course will begin and end at Merv Crag Sporting Complex in Galleon Way, Currumbin Waters after coursing along Currumbin Creek.

Gold Coast City Council's community and cultural development committee chairman Robert La Castra said the first high-profile time trial held in Australia.

"This is an exciting opportunity for the Gold Coast, particularly Currumbin Valley, to be the hinterland backdrop of Australia's very own 'tour de' style championships," Cr La Castra said.

"The state individual time trial championship is the most prestigious time trial event on the Cycling Queensland calendar.

"Hosting this event would attract riders from interstate as well as throughout Queensland, as it strives towards becoming Australia's' most popular time trial event."

Cr La Casta said the event would showcase the city as a destination for elite cycling competitions.

"Council has worked for many years with various bodies and event organisers to attract, establish and develop additional national-standard cycling events in the city," said Cr La Castra.

"This event will help to promote the Gold Coast as an events and cycling centre as it will utilise the proposed Commonwealth Games road race route."
