SNOW, glorious snow.

Australia's southern ski slopes are getting plenty of it and there's still talk that New South Wales and Queensland could get a taste of it this weekend.

The Mountainwatch Facebook site posted there that up to 40cm has fallen so far across the alps.

"Snow to 700m today, keep one eye on the forecast and another on the sky!,'' the post on Friday morning read.

Thredo Resort also reported good falls this morning.

Stanthorpe in Queensland had its first taste of what could be come earlier in the week.

The ABC reported that snow could fall on Melbourne's outskirts and in parts of New South Wales as a cold front pushes across the country, bringing freezing temperatures and rain.

Adelaide on Thursday shivered through its coldest day in four years, reaching only 12.6C.

A weather bureau forecaster told the ABC Victoria's snow level had been hovering about 1,400 metres this week, but that could drop to 500 metres on Friday.

That means the possibility of snow falling in places like the Grampians, Yarra Ranges and Mount Dandenong.

The BoM has predicted significant snowfalls of up to 15 centimetres later on Friday in New South Wales' Central West, especially Orange, Oberon and Blayney, and lighter snow in the Blue Mountains.

In Queensland, the Bureau of Meteorology had said it was possible snow could fall as far north as Queensland's Great Dividing Range in the Darling Downs.
