Solar carparks could become hot property

CARPORTS could be the next big thing in renewable energy if a new project in Brisbane proves successful.

On Friday, Australian Greens deputy leader Senator Larissa Waters launched Shakra Energy's PA Central Solar Carpark in Buranda.

Boasting hundreds of solar panels on top of carports, it will generate clean power for a nearby retail and office building and will stop the release of more than 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide pollution a year.

"Through solar carparks, businesses can save money by generating their own power and power for their tenants," Shakra Energy managing director Sam Khalil said.

"It makes sense for shopping centres to use all of that sunlight right outside their door while providing shade for their customers' cars.

"This is the first project of its kind in Australia and we see great potential for the idea to expand across the state and the country."

Ms Waters said the project would help Queensland lead the way in renewable energy innovation.

"While coal is in structural decline, renewable energy is on the up and up, generating new jobs and offering trade opportunities," she said.
