Northern Star take out the JH Williams Shield

A SOLID all-round display saw Northern Star claim silverware as FNC men's hockey action continued.

An accomplished performance saw Star take out the JH Williams Shield with a 4-2 victory over Kingscliff at the Goonellabah turf.

Star dominated Saturday's entertaining contest from the start and opened the scoring when Steve Boothroyd netted off a pass from Matt Harmon.

Kingscliff almost drew level soon after, but a brilliant save from goalkeeper Aaron Head denied them a goal.

Star went two up when Matt Harmon converted a penalty corner with a drag flick high into the net.

To its credit, Kingscliff came back but were denied when Thomas Vantaggiato made a great block on the line to stop what seemed a certain goal.

Star went to the break 3-0 up after Thomas Vantaggiato converted a penalty corner with a fiercely struck drive.

The second half saw more end-to-end play. Star's Richie Wightman tipped in for a goal off a rebound from the goalkeeper's pads to virtually seal the victory for his team.

In the final five minutes, Kingscliff came to life and scored two quick goals to make the scoreline respectable. Henry Prichard got a touch on a cross pass and then Andrew Ridgway converted a penalty corner for a second goal.

Meanwhile, young players can still register for the forthcoming Hockey NSW under-12 development clinic.

Top coaches will help present the event, which is taking place at the Goonellabah turf on Wednesday, July 31.
