Some free parking at Tweed Hospital car park says MP

TWEED MP Geoff Provest says a proposed multi-storey car park at Tweed Hospital would include exceptions for patients needing ongoing treatment.

He also said negative focus on the paid carpark by Shadow Minister for the North Coast Walt Secord and Labor's Tweed candidate Ron Goodman is a "cheap political shot".

"The fact is, it would be a mixture of paid and free parking, with wide consultation planned before any decision is made," he said.

"There would be exceptions for patients undergoing dialysis, chemotherapy and things like that.

"The car parking at the hospital has been a significant issue for years."

Mr Provest said the car park would be state run, funded by a loan from treasury to be paid over a lengthy period of time, and would free up money for clinical operations.

"I think the exciting thing is in the hospital master plan...we'll have an increase in beds to 500 from about 170," he said.

"I think Walt and his crew are chasing a cheap political shot and I'm disappointed on the Labor focus on paid parking.

"The thing is, if I was made to choose between a paid carpark and hospital beds I'd choose the beds, like anyone would."

Mr Provest wanted to emphasise that no final decision had been made on the carpark so further details about its operation would be purely speculative.

However, he said the cost would be minimal and a pensioner rate would apply.
