OPINION: Some names should be an automatic no

I HAVE long held the belief that there needs to be someone in the Births, Deaths and Marriages office who can veto baby names.

A perfect example is last week an American couple were proud that they'd passed on the tradition of naming their child after an alcoholic beverage.

Louisiana father Jack Daniels Leathers and his wife Lydia have named their newborn baby boy Jim Beam Leathers.

Continuing on with the whiskey theme, they were married by a Judge Johnny Walker.

Although this is a fairly tame example, I think there needs to be some stricter rules in place.

Take Germany for example.

You must be able to tell the gender of a child by the first name, and the name must not negatively affect the well being of the child.

And in Iceland they have a committee that decides if a name is acceptable.

Thankfully, judging by the lists in today's story there are some pretty normal names in the Wide Bay.

But one quick look through a class list can still leave you shaking your head.
