Petula Clark warming up for gig at Twin Towns in May

PETULA Clark boasts a show business career spanning seven decades, but she's not above spending a luxurious day on Coolangatta's beaches.

The British "Downtown" singer said she's always enjoyed performing in Tweed - and she'll be back at Twin Towns Services Club next month.

It's fortunate daylight saving has already ended; Ms Clark said a previous show was jeopardised when a music director was confused by the time zone.

Ms Clark released a new album last year - in English and French.

"The English version was very successful," Ms Clark said.

"I'll be doing a lot of those songs at my shows in Australia."

However, she won't be ignoring those old classics.

"I've been blessed with some really great songs," Ms Clark said.

"They're still interesting for me to sing; but I also like to keep it fresh.

"I like the new and the untried."

On the seemingly endless nature of her showbiz career, Ms Clark said it's nothing out of the ordinary.

"It's a privilege to be doing something you love," she said.

"I never really made a decision to go into showbiz, but I've never really known anything else."

Despite this, Ms Clark insists she's "not very showbiz at all".

She said she's not one to get caught up on trends, with her music reflecting more of herself than what's contemporary.

"I really don't want to be influenced by anything," she said.

"You have to be true to yourself."

For now, being true to herself has meant hiding away in the French Alps.

"If it was another time in my life, I would settle in Australia," Ms Clark said.

Ms Clark said she'd try to catch up with Olivia Newton John at her house in Byron Bay.

Petula Clark's career took off when she entertained the troops during the Second World War. Since then, she's sold more than 70 million records and released a handful of enduring hits.
