Sourcing and sizing rocks for Kirra groyne underway

KIRRA residents can expect trucks to begin delivering rocks for the Kirra groyne project in September, sourcing and sizing of rocks has been in progress and the project is on schedule according to the council.

The previous stage of the project was establishing entry and exit access points, as well as the gathering of smaller rock material.

Large Haulage trucks will be entering Queen Elizabeth Park in order to drop the five to fifteen ton rocks needed, Miles St can expect increased traffic during this period.

Large plant and equipment will be operating from September through to December.

Residents can expect some noise as council stockpiles the rocks and then puts them in place.

Daily News historian Dy Miller gave us an insight into the some of the groyne's history and provided the photo's attached.

Last time a rock was placed on the groyne was December 8, 1972 by wall contractors T and J Blundell Pty Ltd.

The original groin extension back then took 29 weeks to complete and used 50,000 tons of rock from a quarry at Terranora.

Estimated to take 40 weeks and use 53,000 tons, the project was completed early and was a success.
