South Mur'bah properties get more flood protection

PROPERTIES in South Murwillumbah will now be more protected have more protection from flooding, thanks to the construction of a new pipeline.

Installation of a new 600m-diameter pipe to drain stormwater more effectively from the Stafford Rd area is due to be completed by the end of March within a couple of days.

The Tweed Shire Council began work on the $245,000 project in January.

The council's co-ordinator of civil design engineering, Warren Boyd, said the new stormwater drainage will would have more than double the capacity.

"The old stormwater pipe serving that section of South Murwillumbah had a capacity of roughly 130 litres per second," Mr Boyd said.

"The new pipe will direct stormwater to the river levee bank at a capacity of up to 300 litres per second."

When a rainfall event exceeds this level, a surface drain will direct surplus water to an open space area along Wardrop St.

"Any rainfall up to or exceeding a one-in-five-year storm event could still cause flooding in the Stafford Rd area," Mr Boyd said.
