Southern schoolies behaving: police
WHILE Gold Coast police have made 155 arrests in the last two days, Tweed Byron police are pleased overall with the behaviour of school leavers south of the border.
Tweed police Inspector Brad Stewart said behaviour had been good across the Tweed shire, except for a "bit" of alcohol-related problems.
"There's a few issues with people drinking in non-alcohol designated areas but overall we're pretty happy," Insp Stewart said.
"Those issues have been isolated to Byron Bay."
And while the majority of schoolies at Surfers Paradise are behaving well, half of the arrests made in the precinct since Saturday have been school leavers.
Superintendent Paul Ziebarth said the arrests were on the same scale as last year's Schoolies event.
"What's pleasing to see is the schoolies arrests to this point this year is very similar to last year and both years are considerably down as far as arrests and disorders go in comparison with previous years," Supt Ziebarth said.
"The level of intoxication and disorder has been largely reduced the general intoxication levels are down.
"We want to minimise the amount of people taken away in ambulances and minimise the amount of people in Gold Coast Hospital."
Superintendent Paul Ziebarth said an investigation was ongoing into an incident where a young man fell from a balcony on Sunday night.
He said it was believed the young man had attempted to jump into a swimming pool and was now in a critical condition in Gold Coast Hospital.
Supt Ziebarth said the investigation was based around Responsible Service of Alcohol legislation.
The fall follows another balcony incident on Saturday morning where a man in his 30s died after falling from the balcony of a Surfers Paradise Boulevard high rise apartment around 11.20am (Qld).
Police said that incident was not being treated is suspicious and a report is being made for the coroner.
