Investigations start after speedway grandstand gives way

UPDATE, MONDAY: A WORKPLACE Health and Safety Queensland investigator has been at Macs Speedway this morning to make further enquiries into a grandstand giving way on Saturday night, a spokesman says.

Meanwhile, A Mackay Base Hospital spokeswoman said a 38-year-old man and 14-year-old girl remained in hospital in a stable condition this morning following the incident.

 

UPDATE, SUNDAY: A 38-year-old man and 14-year-old girl remain in Mackay Base Hospital following part of a grandstand giving way at Macs Speedway at Palmyra last night.

The man, who has a broken leg, and girl, who has a broken wrist, were in a stable condition this afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A seven-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl also caught up in the incident were not admitted to hospital.

Macs Speedway was approached for comment, but its promoter declined and said he would first have to speak with the speedway's governing body.

UPDATE, 8.30PM: Police and Workplace Health and Safety will investigate what caused a grandstand at Macs Speedway to collapse tonight.

UPDATE: Four spectators including two children have been left injured after a grandstand collapsed at Macs Speedway.

Queensland Ambulance Service said a man sustained a leg injury, a 14-year-old girl had a wrist injury and the two children had minor injuries.

All four patients have been transported to Mackay Base Hospital.

Police will be investigating the incident.

EARLIER: PARAMEDICS are on scene at Palmyra after a grandstand collapsed at Macs Speedway.

Three people have been reported to have been injured in the incident.

Queensland Ambulance Service described their injures as minor at this stage.
