Splendour in the Grass’ inspiration and heart
FESTIVAL-goers crammed into the GW McLennan tent at Splendour in the Grass on Saturday afternoon as a musician, brother and friend was honoured in a touching tribute.
Splendour is many things; fun, up-tempo and upbeat and now emotion charged can be another description added to the list, in what was without a doubt, one of the most inspiring performances in the festival’s 16 year history.
In the most poignant moment of Splendour 2016, the In Loving Memory of Szymon band and special guests delivered a stirring set from gifted musician Szymon Borzestowski’s Tigersapp album, which was released posthumously after the Novacastrian took his own life when he was just 23.
The group, made up of Szymon's brother and Gang of Youths drummer, Dom Borzestowski and fellow siblings siblings Eva, Kubush, and brother-in-law Josh Irwin, brought the Tigersapp project to life.
“It was an honour and a privilege to release this music last year,” Kubush Borzestowski said as the group took the stage to a huge ovation.
“Now we have an opportunity to play this for the first official time for all you guys.
“This is so amazing for us so thank you so much for being here.
“We’ve got some guests also joining us up on stage so please stick around, it’s going to be a great show.”
Guests including Gang of Youth’s lead singer Dave Le’auepepe, Little May, Emma Louise and Ball Park Music’s Sam Cromack all took the stage throughout the show to join the siblings on vocals.
The band led the crowd through live versions of songs from Tigersapp album, which received an ARIA nod for Best Adult Contemporary Album and featured on the Australian Music Prize long list when released in 2015.
The show also featured songs being played for the first time, which an emotional Dom made particular note of when introducing the first.
“This is a new track of ours that wasn’t featured on Tigersapp,” he said.
“Just a few months before Szymon passed away he actually handed this song to me on CD and said ‘I really like this song, it’s a good one and I’d like you to have it’.
“I’ve treasured that disc and we’ve been able to pull it apart. Hope you enjoy it.”
The show’s momentum never faltered before closing track Golden drew the crowd together for a big ovation, which was befitting of the emotionally charged set.
Szymon's sister Eva said the show was a special moment for the family.
"We are so excited to perform, but never imagined we'd be performing Szymon's music without him. We simply want to do justice to his art, and revel in the beauty of his incredible music."
The group did just that.
