Spooky film explores musical curse

A KINGSCLIFF cinema is hoping to open a new film next week but given the subject matter it might not go according to plan.

The Curse of the Gothic Symphony is a story that took seven years to film about the Brisbane performance of a classical music piece that was 28 years in the making.

Cinemax Cinema Kingscliff owner Stephen Buge said there was a good reason for the delays ... the symphony was cursed.

"It (The Gothic Symphony) took 28 years before it was performed and it requires two orchestras, four brass bands, five choirs and 600 people to perform it," Mr Buge said.

"After the composer Havergal Brian died he was considered a genius.

"It's said that as he wrote the symphony he would wax seal it every night but in the morning there would be corrects and suggestions written into it.

"Now I don't know if the composer did it himself but it does make for an interesting story."

The story is set in Brisbane where it had its only Australian performance and London where Mr Brian wrote his masterpiece.

"The film took seven years to make and the cinematography is quite amazing," Mr Buge said.

"It is quite unusual and music lovers will love it.

"I think it will do well in the Tweed after another film based on music Mrs Carey's Concert was packed out."

The Curse of the Gothic Symphony opens at Cinemax Cinema Kingscliff on July 19.
