Sports people up for fundraiser

A LONG list of sporting legends will attend a sportsman’s dinner for fallen Kingscliff firefighter Andrew “Packy” Turnbull later this month.

Golfer Rachel Hetherington, former test cricketer Greg Ritchie and Graeme Jackson, Graeme Eadie and Scott Sattler, all of NRL fame, will attend to host and speak at the function on Friday, November 27, at the Cudgen Leagues Club to help raise funds for Mr Turnbull’s seven children.

Mr Turnbull died after battling a grass fire at Fingal Head last month.

He was 35.

In the wake of his death, and with Christmas approaching, friends of the popular Kingscliff firefighter have formed a committee to host the fundraiser dinner to raise money for his children: Aubrey, 20, Corey, 16, Christopher, 15, Benjamin, 13, Marcus, 8, Kaleb, 5 and his youngest, Kiara, who is only one year old.

Committee member Jenny Jones said tickets for the dinner are now on sale.

“This is a difficult time for the kids already. We just want to help them get through Christmas,” Ms Jones said.

“Tickets have just been printed and are available to anyone.”

Ms Jones said they have been delighted with the outpouring of support from local businesses and schools who have tipped in to help out with items to auction and raffle on the night.

More than 1500 mourners gathered at the Cudgen Leagues Club last month for his funeral, where Mr Turnbull was given full firefighter honours.

A memorial touch football match is also being organised for Cudgen Leagues’ Family Christmas Day on Sunday, December 6, to help raise funds for the family.

There will also be an auction and raffle on the night to help raise funds.

Items include framed and signed jerseys from the Parramatta Eels, Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Titans, golf with Ms Hetherington, a Nintendo Wii pack and two nights at Twin Towns Resort.

Tickets are $100 a head or $850 for a table of 10 and include a drinks, dinner and entertainment package.
