Stadium boost for Socceroos’ Cup campaign

FOOTBALL: Socceroos players and fans received some good news yesterday morning: their World Cup match against Spain in Curitiba on June 23 will go ahead as planned.

Despite the stadium (pictured) falling well behind its December 31 completion deadline, FIFA has still given it the thumbs up to host four games at the tournament.

Officials at the site of the 40,000-seat venue have assured the world's governing body that it will be finished by mid-May.

"The team at Curitiba understood the pressure we put on three weeks ago," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said.

"The work which was delivered gave us confidence that the stadium will be ready late, but we will have a stadium."

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou would be delighted with that news, meaning no last-minute changes to his team's training bases will be required.
