Whale watching season begins
A WHALE of a time was had over the weekend as people set out to catch a glimpse of the majestic mammals.
The team at Coolangatta Whale Watch took an excited group of whale watchers out on the water bright and early on Sunday.
Coolangatta Whale Watch owner/operators Carol and Tony Hunt took their vessel out through the Tweed bar on the first whale watching cruise of the season.
Ms Hunt said she was not disappointed with the outcome, spotting a pod of whales early in the trip.
“I was absolutely happy with our first tour. When we really get into the season it will just get better,” Ms Hunt said
“I have been doing this for 11 years and I never get tired of it.
“It’s something everybody should do. If you have not seen a whale from a boat before it will change your life.”
The Tweed has one of Australia’s longest whale watching seasons due to its location midway along the migratory path.
“Here on the Tweed, we’re still seeing the last groups travelling north when the earlier ones start returning south, so we’ve got whales either coming or going every day for the full five months of the migration,” Ms Hunt said.
“We’re expecting Migaloo to come past the Tweed around the third week of June – somewhere between June 15 and 20.”
