State of Origin Queensland player ratings for game one

1.       Billy Slater - 6

A couple of probing runs from this champion custodian, but well contained by opposite Jarryd Hayne when in the clear.

2.       Darius Boyd - 6 ½

Scored a try but was well shut down by the Blues outside backs, unlike game one last year.

3.       Greg Inglis - 6

Surprising lack of early thrust in the game, before setting up Boyd for Queensland's only try with a well-timed pass.

4.       Justin Hodges - 7 ½

This man is a colossus. Tremendous strength and footwork with the ball, attracting multiple Blues defenders on many occasions. Great scamper and offload from dummy-half almost led to a try inside the final quarter of the match.

5.       Brent Tate - 6 ½

Under pressure all night by the kicking games of Maloney and Pearce and stood up, but wasn't spectacular.

6.       Johnathan Thurston - 6

You have to commend this champion pivot's courage - playing the game sick and injured. Passing game once again was first class, but his kicks did not place his opponents under any real pressure.

7.       Cooper Cronk - 6

Challenged Michael Jennings early with some testing kicks, but failed to have the impact he had during his outstanding series last year.

8.       Matthew Scott - 6

Tried hard, but the Blues' forward pack was simply too quick and mobile for this tough competitor.

9.       Cameron Smith - 6 ½

Not the Cameron Smith we all know, but played behind an out-enthused forward pack. Almost scored a clever try, but was denied due to a double movement.

10.   David Shillington - 6

Didn't quite bend the defensive line in the same way that Steve Price , Petero Civoniceva and Ben Hannant can.

11.   Nate Myles - 7

Copped a battering all night, and arguably an unfair couple of punches from Paul Gallen for good measure. Stood up to all tests thrown his way.

12.   Sam Thaiday - 5 ½

Quiet early and only really made a slight impact late in the game.

13.   Ashley Harrison - 6

Made a few fearless charges early while his fellow forwards were under the pump.

14.   Corey Parker - 5 ½

Some solid work up the middle, but lacked the grunt that his opposite Greg Bird provided his team.

15.   Matt Gillett - 5 ½

Showed some real class with his few touches.

16.   Ben Te'o - 5 ½

Provided some energy and pace with the ball in attack.

17.   Chris McQueen - 6

Did the small town of Kingaroy proud with some nice touches off the bench in his first Origin game.
