Stepping up for male dancers
GUY Williams is Murwillumbah's answer to Billy Elliot.
The Year 12 student lists dance as his number one passion, just after his girlfriend of course.
After receiving encouragement from a friend, Guy started break dancing at the age of 15 before branching out into classical ballet, ballroom and hip-hop.
The talented performer said any negative attention he receives for his incredible dancing prowess is quickly forgotten when he takes to the stage.
“I have a lot of other interests, and it wouldn't bother me anyway,” Guy said.
“I've changed schools often and I've had to learn to stand up for myself.
“The fact that there are not many male dancers makes me want to do it all the more.”
Guy had some advice for boys afraid to break out the dance shoes.
“Harden up, don't worry about what people think, and take a class,” he said.
“At my first concert I performed eight different routines. It was intense, hard work, and I loved the challenge.
“Even during class I find my hands start moving to a rhythm in my head, it's so automatic.”
Fellow Murwillumbah High School student Rossco Martin has followed Guy's lead and said dancing had given him more confidence and new friends.
Guy and Rosco will bring their moves to the stage this week while performing with a group of students at Murwillumbah High School Arts Week.
The arts week began on Wednesday and will conclude tonight.
Tickets are available from Murwillumbah High School.
