Stoner promises Tweed to get extra cops if bikies persist

DEPUTY Premier Andrew Stoner says more resources will be made available to Tweed police if the bikie gang problem accelerates in the area.

But Mr Stoner said he accepted advice from police at the highest levels that bikie gang activity had not increased in Northern NSW following the recent introduction of tough new laws in Queensland.

"I know that local police are on top of the issue," he told media at a press conference staged on the Queensland-NSW border mark in front of Twin Towns Services Club on Thursday.

"And I anticipate that we'll be able to supply even more resources to police in this area should this become an ongoing issue."

Mr Stoner, who is also the NSW Nationals leader, met in the Tweed with other MPs from his party as well as local community groups.

They include the Minister for Roads and Ports Duncan Gay MLC; Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Hospitality and Racing, Minister for the Arts, and Minister for the Hunter George Souris MP; Minister for Primary Industries and Small Business Katrina Hodgkinson MP; Minister for Local Government and the North Coast Don Page MP, and Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Healthy Lifestyles, and Minister for Western New South Wales Kevin Humphries MP.

Tweed National MP Geoff Provest said they were meeting with 27 local groups and individuals who wanted to lobby the MPs on various matters.

They include Tweed Shire Council in which the future of Lot 490 at Kingscliff was expected to be discussed.
