Stored history goes on market
THE historic Tyalgum general store, established 1908, has been reluctantly put on the market by its owners.
Steven Berndt and Karen Nixon have lovingly looked after the charming heritage space for almost 10 years since moving to Tyalgum from Brisbane's New Farm.
"Neither of us had ever considered owning a store and living in a little village, however when we walked into the general store for the first time in 2004 (when it was for sale) we realised what a wonderful opportunity it would be to embrace and enjoy a totally different lifestyle to the one we were living," Mr Berndt said.
The Tyalgum store, art gallery, Tyalgum Licensed Post Office and owners' lodge are on the market as a package deal through Ray White, with an asking price of $750,000, so the couple can move on to their next business venture.
"We're going to set up Tasmania's best bed and breakfast," Mr Berndt laughed. "We reckon we still have one business venture left in us, before we wheel ourselves into a nursing home."
The general store's 185sq m premises maintains its original beauty, featuring 4.6m pressed metal ceilings and large original bay windows and street facade onto Coolman St.
The Tyalgum store featured as the backdrop for a US TV series in September 2013.
