Storm cuts power supply

TWEED Valley residents experienced electrical problems on Thursday night after a severe electrical storm interrupted the power supply.

More than 5000 lightning strikes were recorded in the Northern Rivers, Tweed and Gold Coast as the storm passed through about 7pm DST.

Essential Energy’s Far North Coast regional general manager Richard Wake said that at the height of the storm nearly 4000 customers were without power in the Tweed Valley.

“The Uki area was affected first, about 7pm, followed by Murwillumbah through to Kingscliff as the storm centre moved north,” Mr Richard said.

“Our workers re- sponded quickly and we were able to re- store power to the majority of residents within two to three hours, depending on the extent of damage.

“Near Uki and in Murwillumbah we had trees blown into pow- erlines by strong winds, as well as a lightning strike in Tree Street, Murwillumbah, which damaged switchboards and meters at some premises.”

Crews continued to work on isolated faults into the early hours of the morning.
