Drawing attention to waste

ROMAN Norling said he wanted to show how "diverse and beautiful the world is" with his award-winning drawing.

And for the Year Five Palm Beach State Primary School student's efforts, his piece will promote the Wipe Out Waste message across the Gold Coast for the next 12 months.

"When I first found out it was in the finals I couldn't believe it - I was stoked and started jumping around," Roman said.

"I made up a bit of a rhyme for it and I tried to get some good lettering and make it stand out with bright colours."

He said it was important to recycle bottles and boxes at home because landfills would be overflowing if everything was thrown into them.

Gold Coast councillor Bob La Castra congratulated Palm Beach Primary on behalf of Division 13 councillor and Deputy Mayor Daphne McDonald - who was running late - for its environmentally friendly practices.

"You're all a credit to your school," Cr La Castra said.

"Keep up the good work, 'cause you really are a shining example."

Cr McDonald arrived in time to congratulate the winners and thank principal Ed Marconi for "doing a lot for the community".

The artwork of Tallebudgera State Primary School student Alec Tudehope, 10, will also grace the side of one of the two decorated trucks.
