Student raped by teacher in classroom gets $65m

A FORMER high school student who was repeatedly raped by her former geometry teacher in his classroom has been awarded $49.3 million ($65 million).

The Miami Herald reports that the lawsuit, filed in 2014, accused the school board of neglect in failing to protect her from teacher Bresnniel Jansen Mones who the lawsuit alleged had a known history of improper behaviour.

The former student, known only as CRR, brought the case in 2014.

"CRR was not the only student Jansen tried this with," her lawyers Leighton Law said in a statement. "At least one other young student was approached and was engaged in a texting relationship with Jansen attempting to groom and escalate the relationship. The girl's parents found out, terminated it, and alerted the school. Jansen was the subject of an investigation, which found that he made inappropriate contact with the student. But he was not disciplined."

The suit says Mones sent text messages to her in 2013 that went from being about school to being about sex, including photos of his genitalia.

Mones forced oral sex on CRR and had intercourse with her on his desk in December 2013, the suit says.

She transferred to Varela High School only to find Mones lived across the street.

After Mones' guilty pleas, he served six months in prison and was released in June. His original 10-year probation period has already been reduced to eight. He lives in South Miami-Dade as a registered sex offender.

The woman will receive $US13,906 for the past medical expenses, $US255,000 for her future medical expenses, $US4 million for past mental anguish, pain and suffering, $US15 million for future mental anguish, pain and suffering, and $US30 million in punitive damages.

She said she still had trouble dealing with what happened to her

"I was 16 years old at the time, and he had complete control over me," she told NBC News 6. "I try not thinking about it and I don't speak of it unless I have to face a certain situation. But other than that I try and go about my normal day."
