Students get red-hot visit
MURWILLUMBAH East kinder and year one students were given a surprise visit by members of the Murwillumbah Fire Brigade last week.
"John Taylor and his team members Jack, Jason and Hugh showed off their gleaming fire engine and their fire fighting equipment as well as talking to the children about the many aspects of fire safety," a school spokesperson said.
"The students were involved in discussion about hot appliances in the kitchen and living area, the importance of fire alarms in homes, barbecue and campfire safety and the danger of using matches and lighters.
"They were also drilled in what action to take in the event of a fire in a building, bushfires and what to do should someone's clothing catch alight.
"The information was extremely informative and pitched at a level that made it very accessible for our young students.
"Naturally they enjoyed practicing the 'stop, drop and roll' technique for extinguishing fire on clothing."
A highlight of the presentation was the opportunity each student had to man the huge fire hose with one of the fire men and try to knock over some safety cones.
"The fire brigade's visit was a fantastic way to instil fire safety awareness in our students as well as a wonderful opportunity for the children to be made aware of one of the most important community services we enjoy in our area," the spokesperson said.
