Students to entertain seniors

STUDENTS from Murwillumbah Public School and Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School have begun preparations to entertain some of Tweed's senior citizens at the Tweed Seniors Expo in three weeks.

Tweed Senior Citizens Week committee chairwoman Pauline Dow said both schools had in the past provided outstanding entertainment for seniors' events in the Tweed.

“The students' enthusiasm and talent will be an exciting component of the expo,” Mrs Dow said.

The expo was postponed last month because of heavy rain. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 10.

The Murwillumbah Public School performance is scheduled for early in the afternoon at the expo, which will run from 9am to 3pm.

The school has a concert band, a bunyip (learner) band and its “whopping big band”- all guided by music teacher Vikki Armour.

School principal Robyn Edwards said the talents of students were identified early.

“Trumpets, trombones, saxophones, flutes, recorders, drums and percussion instruments can be heard echoing through the school corridors each week,” Ms Edwards said.

“Our senior choirs sing like angels too. The school's 4, 5, 6 Choir has been selected to perform at the Sydney Opera House in October.”

The Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School's Bel Canto Choir is scheduled to perform at the expo during the morning.

The Bel Canto Choir performs regularly throughout the coast at a variety of corporate functions, such as the Business Excellence Awards and Seagull's Charity Ball. It is one of four choirs at Lindisfarne, with 40 students involved.

This year's Seniors Expo hopes to also showcase a remarkable performer, 10-year-old cellist Stephen Aveling-Rowe.

On his website Stephen is described as “a thinker, a budding entrepreneur and a sensitive musician who plays piano, pipe organ and cello”.

The Tweed Seniors Expo is to be held from 9 am to 3 pm at the Seventh Day Adventist Centre, Racecourse Road, Murwillumbah.

Bookings are essential for the free buses to and from Tweed, West Tweed /Bilambil/Terranora and the Tweed Coast. Limited spaces are available. To book contact Pam Veness on (02) 6670 2674.
