Success for Murwillumbah Cup

ORGANISERS of The Murwillumbah Cup have hailed yesterday's event that brought racing and fashion together as a complete success.

Held every year on the first Tuesday of November, to coincide with the Melbourne Cup, the cup is the premier event of Tweed River Jockey Club.

Chairman Bernie Quinn said the club has been around for more than 100 years and the cup won't disappear any time soon.

"Of course it'll keep going," Mr Quinn said.

"It'll always be around. The Murwillumbah Cup is part of the valley's entertainment."

He said the event also brought money into the local economy.

"There were people from Surfers Paradise right down to Ballina," he said.

He said the club employed about 70 people for the event yesterday.

"That's got to help the local economy."

Mr Quinn said it was important that as a racing club they raced as often as possible.

"Financially, to the club, it's our biggest day.

"It's the day that we survive from.

"It's another entertainment that people only attend once a year.

"And it's probably the equivalent to 30% of our (annual) income."

Areas of the event, other than the racing, have expanded in recent years.

"Fashion is becoming bigger and better.

"There were 62 women that were lined up for best dressed," Mr Quinn said.

"Overall it was a fantastic day.

"I want to thank the young people that dressed immaculately, men and women."
