OPINION: Sugar police on patrol at our schools

I LIKE to think that I have a fairly good handle on my parenting, but when it comes to packing a Kindy lunch for my daughter, the choice is all but gone.

The sugar police are in full swing with lunches at kindergartens and schools around Australia, which leaves parents with fewer and fewer food choices for their children.

I made the fateful mistake of putting a packet of Tiny Teddies in my daughter's lunch box one week.

When my daughter returned home, the packet was left in the lunchbox un-opened, with a note detailing the do's and don't of what was allowed.

I love my daughter's kindy, but this attitude of food shaming parents with their choices for lunches is starting to get worse.

The goal posts have moved so much in the nine years between having my two children, so what was once allowed is now a total no-no - and it's frustrating to say the least.

I understand that we all need to be encouraged to offer healthy eating habits to our children, but I don't believe these strict standards are substantiated.

What I can and can't pack in my daughter's lunchbox will in no way stop me from giving her the odd lolly at home.

She eats very healthily and would prefer the sweetness of a strawberry to an artificial sweet, but it still doesn't mean that I won't give her a sweet treat when I feel she deserves one.

So why am I being shamed so badly about minor sugar choices?

Don't even start me with the 'naked lunch' trend of not wrapping a sandwich in plastic wrap.

As a working mother, I am very time-poor, so the vast majority of lunchbox snacks consist of products that are on the 'no' list.

The list of what we can't pack for their lunch is starting to outweigh what we are allowed to pack, so I hate to think where we'll be at in another 10 years' time.
